End of Year report 2023

End of Year Report

Year Overview

What a year it has been, the 2023 growing season was a bit of a mixed bag and presented some challenges for our small vineyard, which, as you know, is planted exclusively with Pinot Blanc grapes. We managed to be frost free early in the season, but by July and the incessant wet weather, the disease pressure was enormous and  we experienced an outbreak of downy mildew. We took aggressive measures to control the disease, always following our Ethos of following Organic and Regenerative viticulture methods, but inevitably we suffered some losses. From mid August the weather was a lot kinder and the sun and heat of the last few weeks of September were very much appreciated.

Despite the challenges, we are ecstatic with the quality of the grapes we were able to harvest. The fruit was ripe and healthy, with excellent balance and flavor. We believe that this year's Pinot Blanc grapes have the potential to produce an outstanding wine.

Harvest Highlights

The grapes were harvested at optimal ripeness, with excellent sugar levels and acidity. As per usual, on October 16th, the grapes were carefully hand-harvested to ensure that only the best fruit was selected for winemaking.

Apart from the Classic style, I am happy to report that we managed to process some of the grapes to make our third Ancestral Sparkling Vintage, that if you remember, I named Lola’s Tipple from the 2022 Vintage, in honour of my precious dog who passed away unexpectedly  the same year. The rest of the grapes are destined for a new style that will be revealed in the new year and watch the space for the release of the first vintage of Pinot Blanc Amphora, BFREE 2022, also in the new year, I am so Excited!!!
